A state of suspense - with Irene Reig & Kika Sprangers
The musicians were ready and happy to kick things up this spring. Dates were set in Spain and the Netherlands and the buzz had started around their borders-breaking quintet Alto For Two. But even before Dutch saxophonist Kika Sprangers and Spanish saxophonist and composer Irene Reig played their first rehearsal together, the artistic world came to a standstill. No first performance at showcase festival Jazz I Am in Barcelona, no Dutch debut at Rabobank Amersfoort Jazz Festival and no follow-up during inJazz in June.
In this talk, led by Worldwide FM's Debra Richards, both saxophonists will tell about their co-creative process, how the project flourished between Amersfoort and Barcelona and what connects them in the first place.
Debra Richards: broadcaster, journalist and PR consultant with over 25 years of experience in music and media. Monthly shows on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide FM, Radio X (Basel) and Frome FM, recently co-hosted Manchester Jazz Festival online. Currently writes for Jazzwise and Straight No Chaser magazines and after eight years at the BBC, now works with Pro Helvetia and promoters Match & Fuse. Extensive knowledge and broad interest in all music and the arts. Previously a club DJ.

Irene Reig, Catalan saxophonist and composer, has consolidated her position on the current European jazz scene. She is one of the most active artists around and leads various groups including The Bop Collective, with whom she won the Publieksprijs in the Dutch Jazz Competition 2018. She has released two albums VIEWS (Discmedi, 2017) and IASPIS (The Changes, 2019). The former features renowned trumpeter John Swana.

Kika Sprangers, saxophonist, is recognized as one of the finest young talents in contemporary jazz in the Netherlands. During her musical studies she led the saxophone section in the Dutch National Youth Jazz Orchestra, touring internationally. She is drawn to working in a variety of musical settings. Her main focus is her quintet and Large Ensemble (an extension of her quintet including three singers, bass clarinet, French horn, trumpet and flute).
